2 Nigerians in trouble in US over bitcoin scam

Two Nigerians are in trouble in the United States after being indicted by prosecutors for running a fraudulent bitcoin investment scheme.
The Nigerians, Onwuemerie Ogor Gift and Kelvin Usifoh, were charged by Oregon District Attorney’s Office with 11 counts of wire fraud, as well as conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, according to a report.
Nigeria- map
From December 2017 to June 2018, Gift and Usifoh allegedly promoted the fake bitcoin investment scheme via three websites –wealthcurrency.com, boomcurrency.com and merrycurrency.com – promising investors 20–50 percent risk-free returns with instant withdrawals.
Singer R. Kelly Pleads Not Guilty To Sex Abuse Charges
Gift and Usifoh falsely claimed that victims’ bitcoins would be invested using “unique trading methods” and that they would maintain a “constant high interest rate.” The pair also allegedly encouraged investors to transfer bitcoin to their own cryptocurrency wallets. Once transferred, Gift and Usifoh would exchange it for Nigerian naira.
In over six months, the defendants stole 10.88 bitcoins (worth approximately $56,391 at press time) from three victims, one residing in Oregon and two in California, according to the indictment. They also used a photo of a fourth victim to promote their scheme.
In total, the prosecutors alleged that Gift and Usifoh received more than 50 bitcoins ($259,000) through the scam.
Largely due to their pseudonymous, online nature, cryptocurrencies are becoming increasingly popular as a means to scam investors. But law enforcement is catching up.
Last month, New York prosecutors charged a man in a nine-count indictment for duping investors out of over $200,000 in cryptocurrency and cash. And, in February, a 20-year-old man was indicted in the New York Supreme Court over SIM-swapping identity and crypto theft.
Warning cryptocurrency investors over such schemes, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission jointly issued an alert earlier this week, saying that claims such as “risk-free”, “absolutely safe” and “guaranteed profit” are hallmarks of a fraud.

15 killed in raid on Islamist hideout – Sri Lanka police

Suicide bombers cornered by security forces in a hideout in eastern Sri Lanka blew themselves up in a raid which left 15 people dead, including six children, police said Saturday. Sri Lanka police chief Pujith Jayasundara looks on after launching the first online service delivery of the Sri Lankan police at the headquarters in Colombo on March 7, 2017. / AFP A civilian was also killed in crossfire during the night-time raid near the predominantly Muslim town of Kalmunai, with hundreds of families later fleeing their homes. Kalmmunai is in the home province of the jihadist suspected of organising the Easter Sunday attacks that left 253 dead. Three men set off explosives killing three women and six children inside the house on Friday night, police said. “Three other men, also believed to be suicide bombers, were found dead outside the house,” said a police statement. Police officials said all three were shot by security forces. Gunmen opened fire on troops when they attempted to storm the house under cover of darkness, military spokesman Sumith Atapattu said. An ensuing gun battle lasted more than an hour, a military official said, adding that the bodies were recovered following a search operation. Police Arraign Man Over Alleged N2.4m UNDP Job Scam Charred bodies and at least one gunman cradling an assault rifle, were seen in video footage shown on state television. Explosives, a generator, a drone and a large quantity of batteries were seen inside the house. Some 600 Muslims fled a neighbouring settlement built to house displaced survivors of the 2004 Asian tsunami because of the fighting and took shelter in a school, residents said. The civilian was hit in crossfire and died while a wounded woman and child were taken to hospital. The operation followed a tip off that extremists linked to the Easter suicide bombings were holed up in Kalmunai, 370 kilometres (230 miles) east of the capital. Zahran Hashim, founder of the National Thowheeth Jama’ath (NTJ) group blamed for the attacks and one of the Colombo suicide bombers, comes from the same province. The clashes came hours after security forces raided a nearby location where they believe Hashim and other suicide bombers recorded a pledge of allegiance to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi before carrying out the bombings of three churches and three hotels. Police said they found an IS flag and uniforms similar to those worn by the eight fighters in a video used by IS to claim responsibility for Sunday’s attacks. “We have found the backdrop the group used to record their video,” the police said in an earlier statement. The Islamic State group released their video two days after the bombings. Police showed the clothing, the flag, some 150 sticks of dynamite and about 100,000 ball bearings seized from the house on national television. Security forces armed with emergency powers have stepped up search operations for Islamic extremists since the bombings.

Abduct 30 Passengers
Unknown gunmen terrorising Ahoada, Ikwere and Emohua local councils of Rivers State have shot dead a police escort and a driver before abducting 30 passengers of a commercial bus along the Emohua axis of the East-West road.
The Guardian gathered that the hoodlums kidnapped a senior staff of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) after killing his police escort and driver.
The hijacked bus conveying 30 passengers was said to have left Port Harcourt, the state capital, and was heading to Abua Odual council when the gunmen struck, while the vehicle conveying the SPDC staff and his aides was attacked at the boundary between Rumuji and Evekwu axis of the East-West road. The attack reportedly occurred close to a police checkpoint.
The SPDC staff was said to be returning from Bayelsa State to Port Harcourt about 4p.m on Thursday when the incident occurred.
A source in the area said the driver of the bus was shot dead after he denied the kidnappers access into the vehicle by allegedly pressing the lock button.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the attacks, assuring that the police were on the trail of the attackers.
Meanwhile, a social cultural group, Orashi National Congress, has condemned the incessant attacks in the area, giving the state government and security agencies 24 hours to secure the release of the abducted passengers, as well as others reportedly abducted along the Emohua axis of the East-West road.
President of the group, Emeni Ibe, threatened that the group would mobilise a massive protest and barricade the East-West road if the abducted passengers were not released after 24 hours.
“The bus driver was killed instantly. This is too much and generally unaccepted by the good people of Orashi. We will not accept it any longer. I, therefore, call on government and the security agencies to ensure the victims are released unconditionally and unhurt,” he said.
Similarly, a coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Rivers State, led by Enefa Georgewill, said it would join members of ONC to mount pressure on the authorities to secure the release of the passengers.
In a related development, two persons were feared dead in Iriebe community in Oyigbo local council of the state after armed gangs invaded the community and unleashed mayhem on the people.
It was learnt that the incident resulted from a clash between the Hausa community and people from Akwa Ibom State living in the area.

Update

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, says his generation has failed Nigeria.
Speaking on Hard Talk, a BBC programme, the professor said the dreams people of his generation had about the country had not materialised.
Zeinab Badawi, anchor of the programme, had asked the literary scholar: “Has your generation of older Nigerians failed the people?” and he responded, “Yes, I believe so.
“I compare today with dreams and aspirations we had when we all rushed home after studies abroad. We considered ourselves the renaissance people that are going to lift the continent to world standards, competitors anywhere. It hasn’t happened.”
Asked to comment about the 2019 presidential election, he said: “The 2019 election is one of the most depressing elections we’ve been through. Talking for myself, it wasn’t possible for me to make a choice for the simple reason that both candidates (President Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar) both had histories— one immediate, one past —which made one look for alternatives.”
He explained why he was soft on Buhari in 2015 when he referred to the president as a born again democrat.
Soyinka said Buhari did not win the 2015 election because the people were endeared to him but for the fact that Nigerians could not continue with former President Goodluck Jonathan in office.
“General Buhari didn’t really win the first election, he won by default. It was impossible to continue with Jonathan (back in 2015),” he said.
“As it happened, yes, I did use that expression ‘born again democrat’. When somebody competes in an election three, four times and persists, he must believe in democracy… the circumstances in Nigeria, the fact that Nigerians have shown the military what a huge failure they were makes it possible for one to identify the possibility of exceptions when they seem to behave like democrats.
“But in any case, I kept emphasising that Nigerians had a very difficult choice and as I said, It was between the devil and the deep blue sea.”

A 400-year-old Bible stolen from the
Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh has been
recuperated in the Netherlands and is
currently back in the U.S.
The FBI returned the stolen Geneva Bible,
dating back to 1615, on Thursday as it
arrived back on U.S. soil in a box, secured
in bubble wrap.
“These works of art hold a special place in
our society. This Bible is more than a piece
of evidence. It’s an important artifact of
religious significance to people of many
faiths” said FBI Special Agent in Charge
Robert Jones.
The Bible was among in excess of 300
uncommon books, maps, plate books, chart
books and more that were found missing
from the library in April 2017. A previous
historian at the library and an rare book
seller are blamed for taking more than $8
million of those books.
“Since the investigation was initiated, with
the help of the FBI, 18 books have been
recovered, 293 associated maps, plates and
pamphlets have been recovered from areas
all over the United States of America, as well
as London and now the Netherlands,”
Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen
Zappala said.
The American Pilgrim Museum in Leiden
acquired the book secretly, yet authorities
are not saying from whom it was bought.
The gallery found the book was stolen after
the burglary charges were made open a
year ago.

Barcelona are finally ready to sell midfielder, Philippe Coutinho, this summer.
Goal reports that Barcelona chiefs are willing to take a huge loss on Coutinho as they are ready to negotiate offers in excess of €80million (£68.8million) for the Brazilian international.
The report claimed that Coutinho has ‘failed to convince’ Barcelona manager, Ernesto Valverde of his ability to secure a regular role in the first team since his arrival from Liverpool in 2018.
Coutinho has drawn interest from Premier League giants, Manchester United and Chelsea over the past few months.
The 26-year-old had said last week that he has not been playing well for Barcelona so far this season.
Coutinho told Movistar+: “In the last few weeks, months even, I’ve not been playing well but I still want to improve.”

10 tips for improving your self-esteem

Listen
In a nutshell, self-esteem is your opinion of yourself and your abilities. It can be high, low or somewhere in-between. While everyone occasionally has doubts about themselves, low self-esteem can leave you feeling insecure and unmotivated. You might be able to identify a few things that are affecting your opinion of yourself (maybe you’re being bullied, or you might be feeling lonely), or it could be a mystery. Either way, there are heaps of things you can do to improve your self-esteem.

1. Be nice to yourself

That little voice that tells you you’re killin’ it (or not) is way more powerful than you might think. Make an effort to be kind to yourself and, if you do slip up, try to challenge any negative thoughts. A good rule of thumb is to speak to yourself in the same way that you’d speak to your mates. This can be really hard at first, but practisemakes perfect. If you want a few pointers.

2. You do you

Comparing yourself to other people is a sure-fire way to start feeling crummy. Try to focus on your own goals and achievements, rather than measuring them against someone else’s. Nobody needs that kind of pressure!

3. Get movin’

Exercise is a great way to increase motivation, practise setting goals and build confidence. Breaking a sweat also cues the body to release endorphins, the feel-good hormones.

4. Nobody’s perfect

Always strive to be the best version of yourself, but it’s also important to accept that perfection is an unrealistic goal.

5. Remember that everyone makes mistakes

You’ve got to make mistakes in order to learn and grow, so try not to beat yourself up if you forget to hit CTRL+S on a super-important assignment. Everyone’s been there.

6. Focus on what you can change

It’s easy to get hung up on all the things that are out of your control, but it won’t achieve much. Instead, try to focus your energy on identifying the things that are within your control and seeing what you can do about them.

7. Do what makes you happy

If you spend time doing the things you enjoy, you’re more likely to think positively. Try to schedule in a little you-time every day. Whether that’s time spent reading, cooking or just conking out on the couch for a bit, if it makes you happy, make time for it.

8. Celebrate the small stuff

You got up on time this morning. Tick. You poached your eggs to perfection. Winning. Celebrating the small victories is a great way to build confidence and start feeling better about yourself.

9. Be a pal

Being helpful and considerate to other people will certainly boost their mood, but it’ll also make you feel pretty good about yourself
